Observer Corps - Shining Light on Government
The Observer Corps is a national program of the League with its inception in 1966, with the passage of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). In this Act, the federal government defined what the public has a right to know, and how they can exercise that right to obtain government-held information. This was followed by passage of the Federal Advisory Committee Act of 1972 and the Sunshine Act of 1976, both of which focused on public access to government meetings.
League members attend public meetings to observe and report the actions taken in government meeting, such as Metro Council and Committee meetings, the JCPS Board Meetings, and other hearings such as by utilities. Their observations are recorded and shared with the League and the community. Every member of LWV may be an observer.

The League of Women Voters of Louisville is a nonpartisan, grassroots, public policy organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure all citizens are represented in our democracy. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation in the Louisville Metro area. We envision a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge, and the confidence to participate.
We are part of the League of Women Voters of the United States founded in 1920 with roots in the women’s suffrage movement.
As a non-profit, nonpartisan organization, the League does not support or oppose candidates or political parties. LWV Louisville is fully committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in principle and in practice.
